Activity history |
Initially, no formal student recruitment scheme was in operation at the College. However, the College did place advertisements for its courses and lectures in newspapers and the Glasgow University calendar in an attempt to attract students. Responsibilty for this was remitted by the Board of Governors to the Teaching and Staff Committee in 1887 and was subsequently taken over by the Board of Studies. In 1939, the Board of Studies appointed Admissions Committees whose responsibilities included advertising. The Admissions Committees were replaced in 1951 by the Courses and Applications Committee and in 1954 by the first year Admissions Committee. The arrangements for placing the advertisements were handled by the Secretary and Treasurer (renamed Secretary and Director in 1903 and Director in 1911) on the instructions of the Teaching and Staff Committee and the Board of Studies. In 1928, this responsibility was taken over from the Director by the newly appointed College Secretary (called Secretary-Treasurer between 1949 and 1962). In addition to placing advertisements, the Secretary and Treasurer sent out letters and prospectuses to headmasters. In 1956, the College extended its student recruitment activities by holding a conference for headmasters and careers masters. The aim of the conference was to provide information about courses, qualifications for entry and possible careers. The Director and heads of departments were present and visits to departments were provided. Administrative arrangements for the conference were handled by the College Secretary. In 1957, a similar event was held for parents and prospective students. The event was advertised in letters sent by the Director to headmasters and in the press. In 1958, the Board of Studies appointed a Subcommittee on Advice on Careers whose remit was to consider the means whereby a closer contact could be maintained with headmasters and careers masters in order to provide advice to pupils on the qualifications required for entrance to the College. As a result, a letter was sent to all headmasters and careers masters intimating that heads of departments were available for giving advice to parents and pupils. |
